Rower, David Collins ’91, to be Inducted Into Rutgers Athletic Hall of Fame

David Collins ‘91 has been selected to be inducted into the Rutgers Athletic Hall of fame in the annual ceremony this spring.

David Collins ’91 was a three-year varsity letterwinner for the men’s crew, captaining the lightweight team in both his junior and senior years. During his standout career as a member of the Scarlet Knights crew, he led the lightweight eight to fifth place performances at the EARC Championships in each of his three years with the program. As a senior in 1991, Collins led RU to the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championship, winning the pair event. He was honored with the Outstanding Athletic Achievement Award from Rutgers in recognition of his national title. Following his stellar Rutgers career, Collins, who graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering, was selected to compete on six United States National Rowing teams. He won a bronze medal at the 1991 World Championships and represented the National Team in the 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1995 World Championships. Collins won a total of seven United States National Rowing titles, including a gold medal in the lightweight eight at the 1995 Pan-American Games in Argentina. In the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Collins’ lightweight four won the bronze medal, becoming the fourth Rutgers rowing Olympian to have won a medal at the Olympic Games.

Winter Training Wrap-up

Rutgers Crew recently returned to the Garden State from a successful winter training trip to Tampa, FL. With two trailers worth of boats, the men's heavyweight and men's lightweight teams and the women's team were eager to make strides in there training in preparation for an exciting spring season. The rowers flew into Tampa on January 5th and trained twice daily thru January 12th, 2007.
We had terrific weather with plenty of open water for the three squads through Tampa's downtown on the Hillsborough River. The rowers also enjoyed the hospitality of the University of Tampa's dining hall which fueled the hungry rowers.
The trip gave each squad the chance to improve there technique and rowing and shake off any rust that has built up while indoors on the ergs. Intrasquad training between the novice and varsity groups increased an even further desire to train and compete at a higher level.
With only one more month of indoor training and a mild winter, crews are already looking forward to getting back on the he Raritan River in New Brunswick. The women's team kicks off the spring season racing at the University of Rhode Island on March 24th, while the men race at home at March 31st, the lightweights will take on UPenn and the heavyweights will go up against Columbia.

Dear Friends,

I have received copies of over 230 letters that were sent to President McCormick, and I have forwarded copies on to each member of the Board of Governors. Thank you to all who have participated. We know it is making a difference. Please spread the word, and if you haven’t had a chance to write yourself, this is a critical time. President McCormick and the Board of Governors need to hear from as many of the Friends of Rutgers Crew as possible.

Over the past two weeks, I and other members of our Board of Stewards have made contact with several individuals who are in a position to help the crew maintain varsity status. The Board of Stewards has met twice the past two weeks to formalize our plans and finalize our comprehensive proposal that will not only preserve the varsity crew, but enhance the program through endowments and a new facility. We will present our plan to President McCormick and the Board of Governors next week.

In addition, I continue to work closely with the other sports scheduled to be dropped as part of the coalition Save Our Sports (SOS). SOS has done a great job making contacts and doing research that has helped all of us solidify our arguments.

The Members of the Friends of Rutgers Crew Board of Stewards are as follows:

* Charles Crawford ’73, Commodore
* John Frisch ’50, Treasurer
* Fred Borchelt ‘76
* Jennifer Dore-Terhaar ’93
* Robert Kaehler ‘86
* Jeffrey Klepacki ‘90
* Frederick Kroesen ‘44
* Charles Logg ‘52
* Kevin Long ’91
* Tom McKay ‘69
* Bruce Nicholas ‘49
* Will Porter ‘89
* Martin Smock
* Ralph Voorhees ‘47

There is still much work to be done, but with everyone pulling together, we have a good chance of success.

I have received copies of over 125 letters addressed to Dr. McCormick regarding the plan to drop the two men's crew programs from Varsity status after next year. We have forwarded copies to all the members of the Board of Governors and several members of the State Legislature.

Additionally, I will be meeting with several very influential members of the Friends of Rutgers Crew next week to address issues that we will personally be taking up with Dr. McCormick. Anyone who has any suggestions, please feel free to contact me at the e-mail address below.

I am also serving on the coalition "Save Our Sports" (SOS) with the other four teams that are scheduled to be dropped. I have received all of the important correspondences and information received by SOS. This has given us some valuable information. Presently, a letter is in draft on behalf of SOS to Governor Corzine requesting a meeting with him.

The work to save Rutgers Men’s Heavyweight and Lightweight Crew is gaining momentum. If you have not yet been able to join our letter campaign, please take a few minutes now. The letters are having an effect, and all have received replies. It is one sure way to show the level of interest and support.

We continue to receive copies of your letters to Rutgers President McCormick in support of the crew. Our total now stands at 110 letters, copies of which are all forwarded weekly to each member of the Board of Governors and the Athletic Director. The letters continue to be very impressive, as have the people who have written.
Please continue to spread the word and encourage everyone to join the letter campaign to save Rutgers Crew. This is the first, but very important, step in the fight.

The Friends of Rutgers Crew letter writing campaign is going well. To date, we have received copies of over fifty (50) letters to President McCormick from alumni and friends of Rutgers Crew. These letters include many thoughtful, personal, and persuasive reasons to support Men Heavyweight and Lightweight Varsity Crew.
We need to continue to spread the word to our teammates to get as many letters written on behalf of maintaining Varsity status for Men’s Crew to show Dr. McCormick how passionate we are and how important the team is to the University.

The letter writing campaign is very instrumental in building and showing support for maintaining varsity status for the crew. If you haven’t yet given your voice to the campaign, please take just a few minutes to send a letter. The letters are all being copied and compiled and will be delivered to every member of the Board of Governors as well as many influential legislators.

We are working with members of the Rutgers Central Administration to gain their assistance and determine the best way to proceed. It is still very early in the fact finding process and we want to proceed in negotiating only after we have determined the best possible course of action. I will keep you informed as we move forward.
In the meantime, Head Coach Steve Wagner, his staff, and our varsity athletes are preparing for this school year as always. Everyone greatly appreciates the time and thoughts of all of our friends. Thank you.
Up Stream Red Team; Red Team Up Stream!

We are pleased to report that the response to our letter campaign has been overwhelming. Please keep spreading the word and have as many people as you can join the fight for Rutgers Crew. Head Coach Steve Wagner forwarded the letter below that he received from a Rutgers Alumnus. The thoughts in the letter should provide inspiration for us all.
